Party Invitations and Invitation Etiquette

The invitations you choose will create the first impression guests will have of your celebration. Your invitation should convey the same theme, style, message and spirit that you are planning for your special occasion. Whether you are envisioning something classic, traditional or contemporary, the right invitation can create excitement and ensure perfect attendance.

Typically an invitation should include the following: an opening, a description of the occasion, the host(ess) name(s), the honoree name(s), the date and time, the location, an RSVP deadline, your name, phone number, address or email address and any additional special instructions. If you do not want guests to feel obligated to bring gifts simply specify "no gifts" on the invitation. If time is an issue it is acceptable to include an end time on your invitation.

A printed invitation is the preferred way to invite guests to any significant event. It is important to allow additional time for addressing and mailing your invitations as well as receiving RSVP responses. If a celebration is informal, invitations should be extended two to three weeks before the event. For more formal events, six to eight weeks is required.

For invitations to informal occasions like birthday parties, a reply by email or phone is acceptable. For formal invitations to weddings and baptisms, including a response card and envelope is recommended as a way to encourage your guests to RSVP quickly. You should also include a stamped, self-addressed envelope as well as a map of the venue to help the guests find their way.
